David Ashman, Manager and Jenna Estes, Event Coordinator for the City of Long Beach Special Events and Filming Department gave a very informative and interesting presentation regarding Special Events that happen in the city and Filming of TV shows, Commercials and Movies that have been filmed in Long Beach.
A lot of planning goes into preparing for these events. Everything must be reviewed prior to the event happening. Emergency plans, insurance, permits, etc. have to be in place prior.
The Office of Special Events and Filming is the bureau within the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine responsible for permitting all special events and film productions within the City of Long Beach. They strive to provide year-round events to cultivate civic pride, social awareness and cultural enrichment for residents and visitors by permitting special event activities such as, festivals, runs / walks, and citywide holiday celebrations. By doing this, they help build a foundation that fosters sustainable community development, economic development and tourism.
In addition, the Office of Special Events and Filming is responsible for all street closures pertaining to block parties, parades, filming and other events taking place in parks or on public property. They are also responsible for managing the Street Banner Program.
Some of the big special events that have taken place recently was the Travis Pastrana jump onto a barge in the ocean at Shoreline Village on New Year's Eve this year which was nationally televised. The Long Beach Marathon, The Long Beach Jazz Festival and the Long Beach Grand Prix are also big events for the city. In 2004 the US Olympic Swim Trials was another big event. These events bring very large revenue to the city including hotel, restaurant and merchant revenue.
Long Beach is the 5th largest city in the world for filming after LA, NY, Miami, and Washington DC. The City of Long Beach Film Office issues permits for over 800 productions a year with more than 1,000 production days. They are a full-service operation dedicated to promoting Long Beach as a film-friendly region, coordinating and facilitating the permission process and serving as a liaison with local government, the community and the production industry. The role of the film staff is to provide service and assistance to film, television, music, commercial production and still photography businesses to promote economic prosperity. One example of our commitment and the success of productions is our one-stop permitting process and the ability to access the permitting office via the Internet. This will give the ability to access permit applications, insurance requirements and other pertinent information regarding filming within the City of Long Beach.
You may or may not notice but a lot of movies, television shows and commercials have been filmed in Long Beach. Recently, last week's episode of Castle was filmed here along with some other's in the past such as Prison Break, The Unit, The Bachelor, Cold Case and Desperate Housewives. Some feature films that have been done here in Long Beach are Transformers I, II, and III, Star Trek, Get Smart, Spiderman, License to Wed, Confessions of Dangerous Mind, The Cable Guy, and too many more to mention.
After the presentation they opened up the floor for questions.
